Is the shower too small for your vocal talents? Have you always wanted to sing at the top of your lungs? Are your vocal cords ready for a musical challenge? Does your heart overflow with love for music? President Lotte Buyl tells us more about her great passion: the Antwerp University Choir, also known as UKA.
When dwars asks Lotte how she would describe UKA, she doesn’t answer with words like singing, rehearsing, or performing, but foremost with: “a close group of friends,” after which she adds, “who come together to sing.” Each semester they work towards their moment suprême: first the winter concert, then the one in the spring, both with a different theme each year. But it doesn’t end there: “We also organise cantussen, a barbecue and the last two years we’ve also been on an international trip together.”
“Everyone is welcome to join. Being able to read music is not required. We only ask that you can pick up the right tone from the others. During the first open rehearsal, there’s a vocal orientation where the conductor listens how high or low you sing. Afterwards, we work together, as one group, towards a beautiful end result.”
Each Tuesday at 7 p.m., UKA rehearses on the third floor of Prinses16. The first open rehearsal is on Tuesday 30 September; the second one’s the week after.
